The Summit: A Suicide Prevention Conversation 2020!

The summit will aim to:
1. Create awareness and promote understanding about suicide prevention,
2. Define strategies and initiatives for suicide prevention,
3. Explore the concept of productivity and Wellbeing, and
4. Enhance community participation in suicide prevention activities across Africa-

Adams is a former Victorian police officer who studied psychology and later, Rehabilitation Counselling. His police, counseling injury management, senior HR roles, and working with asylum seekers; have made him develop insights into the psychology and social interactions of individuals in trying conditions. He has developed various behavioral and leadership programs to help people deal with several issues; from PTSD to bullying and harassment. He is a keynote speaker on Suicide Prevention and Diversity and runs programs on mental health and wellbeing for corporate organizations and sporting organizations for teens. He’s the author of Lighting the Blue Flame. A book, written as a story of a teen who dies by suicide. Find more herehere and here.

Dr. Ance luce

Dr. Ann is an Associate Professor in Journalism and Communication with nearly 10 years of investigative data journalism (covering health and science), business reporting (covering government and politics), and editorial writing experience in the United States. One of her most notable pieces of journalism was investigating suicide rates in Florida, which garnered support for the creation of the Office of Suicide Prevention and Drug Control in the State of Florida. Ann also won a “Responsible and Ethical Reporting of Suicide’ award from then-Governor, Jeb Bush. She researches in the area of suicide and media and is author of The Bridgend Suicides: Suicide and the Media and editor of Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics and Midwifery, Childbirth and Media. She co-wrote two sets of guidelines for the World Health Organization on the Reporting of Suicide, and Blogging Guidelines on suicide for SAVE, the United States’ largest mental health charity. She also consulted on #chatsafe, guidelines for young people to talk safely about suicide online created by Orygen, Australia. She is currently the UK National Representative for the International Association of Suicide Prevention; steering group member for the National Suicide Prevention Alliance and the Research and Media lead on the Pan-Dorset suicide prevention strategy for the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group.

Dr. Umeh, aka Dr. Lulu the Momatrician is a former Lieutenant Colonel and commander in the US Air Force. She’s a mom, pediatrician, global speaker on youth suicide, bestselling author, and youth suicide activist. She is Nigerian-born, and the CEO of Teen Alive, and Dr. Lulu’s Youth Health Center, both dedicated to serving high-risk teens and suicide prevention. No stranger to suicidal ideations herself, she started speaking publicly about suicide prevention in 2018 after losing colleagues and a patient to suicide. Her mission is to end youth suicide globally through her work with at-risk youth, parents, and communities. She is a regular on media outlets, freelance-writer, podcaster (Suicide Pages with Dr. Lulu), blogger (Words by Black Butterfly) and parent coach. She has been recognized by the Texas Medical Association, Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), “Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission”, and the Texas State House of Representatives.

Andrew E. Zamani, a Professor of Clinical Psychology, is the former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and the current Director of Institute of Governance & Development Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He is Editor- in -Chief of the African Journal of Applied Psychology, Central Nigerian Journal of Psychology, and the Nigerian Journal of Governance & Development Studies. Prof is an Honorary Consultant Psychologist with the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, and taught for a decade at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Jos. He is the Immediate past President of the Nigerian Psychological Association and Executive Council Member of the Pan African Psychology Union.  His research interests are mental health, psycho-epidemiology, substance abuse, stress, clinical counseling models to mitigate public health challenges, psychometrics, and health systems development.

The World Health Organization estimates that in 2020 there would be one suicide every 20 seconds! Understanding the current pandemic (and knowing that this estimation was made before COVID-19); A Suicide Prevention Conversation is of extreme importance.

The Lancet Global Health, the proportion of Africans who receive treatment for mental health problems is extremely low. While the global annual rate of visits to mental health outpatient facilities is 1051 per 100 000 population, in Africa, the rate is 14 per 100 000. THIS HAS TO CHANGE.
